Irving Penn is best known for his fashion photography but is still life photography is rather interesting. Penn's career included work at Vogue magazine. In this photograph he uses a strange way of showing different types of food. He looks like he has put them in a tub and froze them so they all stick together in a way that they can be stacked. This has made it easier for him to stack or arrange and it also makes a really interesting and unique way for him to take photographs. Penn has used a high key set up with very bright lighting. In this photo some of the colours are bright but the colours are still quite dark colours. There is a lot of contrast from the background to the main subject as the background is plain white and the subject is different colours. Penn has also used a reflective surface which has quite a strong impact as it doesn’t look like the subject is floating you can see it’s clearly on a surface. Penn has cropped the image to make the subject to take up most of the area. This image was created in 1977 and it is called ‘frozen foods (with sting beans)’. This image makes me feel very interested in what made him want to do still life photography with food, and what made him come up with the idea of freezing the food first. I also feel like the image could have a possible meaning behind it as they are all the same shape but different items in all different colours. I could link this to my own work by trying out new things and even try out his ideas as they seem like an interesting way to make still life photography more fun and different from other photographers.
